Bucket lit 30 actuating the power of positive thinking

April 20, 2014

In 1962 I spent the month of June in Yokosuka, Japan in the Navy hospital. I had been deployed as a Machinist Mate on the USS Hornet CVS 12. While working in the engine room it was necessary to work in very hot, very damp, very noisy conditions. The access to each area on the ship was controlled by hatches (small water tight doors) and ladders. There were six levels above the hanger deck and six levels below, plus the bilges and places to store ballast. Some of the ladders were straight up and down, while others had a slight tilt to them. While running up and down these ladders many times daily, I begin to feel very uncomfortable and found it difficult to make my feet move freely. I went to sick bay; they defined my illness as spondolethesis (sp) and a form of scoliosis. Since we were on a WesPac six-month tour of duty, they took me to the Yokosuka hospital where the fun began.

To my knowledge no tests were ever run and no discussion of the ship’s sick bay diagnosis was ever considered while in the hospital. The “cure” was to do extensive muscle building exercises each day. Each time the orderlies would come in to check on my progress I would share with them that I wanted to find out the problem so I could move forward; but, yes I still hurt, felt numb, had a difficult time working my legs and was sure that back I the same environment I would have the same difficulties.

Today, at age 70 I still have numbness, severe back pain, and all the other sensations associated with the malady I had fifty plus years ago.

I watch with horror as several hundred thousand wonderful patriotic American citizens are returned to civilian life after years and many times decades of war-time duty. It is on a daily basis that we see one, or more of our citizen soldiers finding life too horrifying to live and choosing to commit suicide. Very frequently these deaths are attributed to suicide by “cop”, or acting out in such egregious manner as to kill and maim others; thereby justifying their release from their earthly hell.

Call it anxiety, depression, PTSD, or mistletoe interventions, I believe what happened to me 52 years ago and what is happening to so many, including members of my own family is frighteningly similar. I think my mind became so fragile in wanting to make things better that I started living as though those aches and pains, as horrifying as they were, were the essence of my life. You have all heard the culmination of this story, but it goes a long way to understanding some of the mysteries of life. One day a fine, young Lt Commander came in and said in a very casual voice, Jacobs, you have been here for just over a month now and nothing has changed, “why do you want to get out of the Navy”? I was shocked and said, if that is what you think, stop playing games with me and send me back to the ship. I was out of the hospital that day heading back to the USS Hornet CVS 12, where I spent three more years in active duty.

To this day, with all the modern medications and interventions for pain and mental fragility, we still find an overabundance of unanswered questions regarding the human experience. I have come to understand the irrefutable fact that medical science is a practice and a patient exercise in sorting through the miracle of the human body and mind. Just as “blood letting” by barbers was the norm in the nineteenth century, surgery in the twentieth century, and atomically generated bots, in the twentieth century, move to the head of the medical class, we will always be way short of the perfection of life given us By God, our Father in Heaven.

It is with our best source of understanding, love, and hope for a bright and marvelous future that I have come to place my eternal well -being. God is here for us. He loves us and makes that desire known throughout our lives. Even when we deny, denigrate, and attempt to destroy his presence in our lives he is still there, loving hoping, and caring for us. Norman Vincent Peale wrote a book entitled “The Power of Positive Thinking”. I am going to find that marvelous antique book and re-read it. I believe it tells the whole story. I believe that we can go forward with an unrelenting fervor our families, for our futures, and for ourselves.

God  bless us all as we look to the Savior, Jesus Christ at the Easter season, and to our Heavenly Father

Bucket list 28 – forgo all untruths

April 8, 2014

Last week I took Charles Lewis to the train station so he could visit a friend in Salt Lake. Public transportation, as it may be, it still cost him $9.10 to make the trip. He purchased a ticket and went on his way. I was so delighted when he returned home with a proud acclamation that he could have traveled without a ticket since the conductor never asked for his ticket; however, he chose to be honest in his dealings with his fellow men and used the ticket instead of storing it away for another occasion. What a blessing it is to see Charles rise to the occasion of honesty and be the big winner. Charles is not given enough shifts at his employment to make enough to pay his bills and obligations; yet, he made this most honorable stretch in his life and became my hero.

David Jacobs struggled with a requirement to sign a weekly paper for workforce services, allowing him to qualify for employment compensation. This paper certified that he was able to return to work without limitation, or physical/mental assistance. After long and fervent prayer and consultation he determined that even though it would enhance the difficulties which they would go through economically, it was the right thing to do to decline the offer of employment compensation because he could not lie. His personal worth, honor, and admiration from many was increased many fold by that decision and he raised his image in my eye to super hero.

Many years ago I attended a leadership training seminar in which I participated in a number of activities requiring individuals to jump through a myriad of physical and mental hoops and be judged on their individual and team success. One of the activities required team members to walk from one side of a partition to another, stepping on pieces of small pieces of wood without stepping on the floor; retrieve a flag and return in the same manner. I dishonored myself when I stepped, then missed a wooden step. Instead of calling myself out, I decided that the prize was worth the little indiscretion and went on to complete the exercise.

Just as we will be judged from the books of life when we return and report to our Savior, I am sure I was judged to be unable to be truthful in dealing with temporal responsibilities. Where was the hero here? Absent without official leave. No one remembers this act of dishonor but me. No one was damaged by this act but me. I share it with each of you in the hope that you will understand each of us has our own little secrets. We can resolve to do as Charles and David have done in the occasions noted above and take the high road; however, if we have gone the other direction and made errors in judgment, our job is to take the reins of our life and make course adjustments that will bring us back to the word of God, to the Iron Rod, and the comfort of the Spirit of Christ, the Spirit of the Holy Ghost, and the understanding we have about life eternal and exaltation.

I would be mocked to scorn if I were to tell you that I had made no more mistakes since that fateful leadership training seminar. It seems that every day I do something that brings to my attention mans’ fallen nature; our rock headedness, our inability to get it right the first time. That is why our Savior shared with us that He will forgive who He will; but ours is to forgive all; not seven times but seventy times seventy. I suspect that if that is not enough times for us to forgive, we can add on a few thousand more just for good measure. I think of how many times I have broken my promise to be truthful, to avoid swearing, to maneuver around road rage, etc, and I begin to understand a small fraction of how much better life would be if we would all learn to forgive, ask for the blessings of Heaven, and allow ourselves to heal with His healing balm through our Savior’s Death, resurrection, and atonement.

God bless each of us as we attempt to live Christ like lives that we can forgive others, love God, and love ourselves as He loves us.

Unintended Consequences

September 9, 2012

One of the grand principles of the universe is that, “for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.” Whether it be physical, mental, or spiritual the principle holds true. One of our homes when I was a child was just off the corner of 12th Street and camelback Road in Phoenix. My father purchased a property with a two-bedroom home, and two small rental homes. This reaction was precipitated by a work accident in which he severely injured his arm and head and was unable to continue working as a carpenter (one of his many occupations).  Soon after we moved there, he found a government auction selling government apartments. He purchased eight units, had the units cut so each unit had two apartments, moved them onto footings on the property, restored them and after significant pressure from neighbors, city government, etc. rented all the units and moved forward with raising our family. My mother was always in the thick of things, working like a mule, first to restore the units and make them rentable; then continuing by cleaning, renting, and taking care of all the other necessities. To be just a little political, it makes me feel real uncomfortable when people are unable, or unwilling to participate in their own “opposite and equal reaction.

I can’t help but be just a little incredulous as I hear stories of people who give up on spiritual or physical things just because can’t see the point. When a person stops working because they, “just aren’t being fulfilled”, or when someone decides that God is mean and/or doesn’t exist, the “opposite and equal reactions profound. In the first scenario, people have three basic choices; make something happen, give up eating and other necessities, or go for the dole. Fulfillment is often in the eye of the beholder and will never be satisfied because each time we cross over the fence for greener pastures our eyes quickly reveal the truth that it really isn’t any better. Contrary to what might be bantered around welfare is no picnic and the taste must be acquired over a long period of time. If one is particularly interested in seeing long-term servitude to public assistance, Aldus Huxley’s, Brave New World, the travesty of the American Native programs, and the horrific spectacle of America’s millions on public assistance.

The story about my father and mother is not unique. I have personally known hundreds, if not thousands of people who have found themselves out of work, physical/mental capacity, or lacking in spiritual knowledge and faith. For the legions who have made the equal and opposite reaction happen by hard work, prayerful decision making, and creative management of the future, success has been sweet and powerful. Have they all returned from the horrors of lost jobs, security, income, and faith the first time out of the box? No, but they just kept trying, praying, and working together to make the leap of faith to better futures. Those who determined to go without physiological needs soon found their fate to be one of starvation, servitude to the welfare systems, or returning to the agony of employment.

Easy? Not even close! Possible; absolutely.

Self enlightenment

December 8, 2012

I want to continue with the visit I had last week about enslavement. To varying degrees we are all held hostage by “things”. Things were very awkward for me in 1957. We had moved from the 12th street apartments dad had developed to the Redwood Wood Motel on State Street in Chandler. I started high school at North Phoenix High School and very shortly ended up at Chandler High School. I wanted to play football, so I went out to practice and they let me play. I wasn’t very big but I was a scrappy fellow. I remember one day something went wrong on the practice field. One of the kids did some dumb kid trick so I went after him like a bulldog. He wasn’t twice as big as me, but at the time he seemed like Goliath. I just remembered his name, Lamb. He wanted to hit me but I was a great street fighter and had him tackled and on the ground. One of the really big guys came to my aide and broke up the mess telling the guys to knock it off and “leave the new kid alone”. In another instance I remember standing at the door of the big red brick high school. I was on the steps about to go inside when a girl said to one of the boys, “push him off the stairs.” Probably the same reason applied, but the moment long lingered in my mind and fifty plus years have gone by and I still wonder what it was that I did to promote such actions in others.

The idea of loving God, loving our neighbors, and loving oneself is the key to virtually all the mysteries of life. Some of us actually get to the point where we do love God. Fewer of us learn to truly love our neighbors; and just a tiny speck of humanity get to the point where they understand that God loved us enough to provide this moment in eternity in which we could learn that we are worthy of loving and being loved. What a remarkable notion. Watch people who go off in a rage over some “road” inconvenience, some notion that they have been wronged, or that another’s attitude is not what it should be. Almost always these incidences come from a lack of self confidence, or understanding of personal worth. Take any profession and put the folks who work in that field under observation and you will be able to tell at a glance what their personal worth quotient is.

My son, David, said it best tonight. He noted that we, yes each of us, collect this basket of garbage. Over the years it festers and rots because we never give it up. Each time we see a person, or recall an incidence in which we were offended, misjudged, stolen from, or denied an opportunity, all that putrid vengeance, rage, and ill-will boil to the top and the whole things starts over again. His answer with which I totally concur is to throw up, get the poisons out and go on with life. Sicknesses such as cancer, heart attacks, diabetes, mental defect, and all the others are absolutely real. They will make you die prematurely. They will make you stop enjoying life. They will make you into a person you do not want to be. So what can we do about such concerns?

The first thing we should do is use the fantastic medical help we have in this great country. The second is to research and seek out alternative medications, holistic medicine, oriental healing, yoga, self hypnosis, etc. The third is to understand the power of spirit cleansing, prayer and spiritual blessings. Each of us has access to our spiritual leaders who have authority to bless our lives, our spirits, and our physical bodies. The fourth is to search our personal insights. Look at the end game. See what we want from life; then, challenge ourselves to use PMA. The acronym PMA stresses the use of Positive Mental Attitude. Another interpretation of PMA (hopefully one I made up and didn’t steal) is a great companion to the first because it asks us to Please Make Adjustments.

No one can just get physically better by “willing it so”, but we can all look to the tools we have to work with and challenge our minds and bodies to work to improve our personal lot. I watched a television spot last night in which a 55 year old fellow was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He didn’t just lie down and die. He and his family went into the marathon business and at the airing of this segment; he was just completing a marathon in Hawaii that would be his last on a journey to run a marathon in all fifty states. Wow! Talk about going out with a bang.

Thanks for your wonderful love and friendships. You all make my world a better place.

God bless you as you sojourn into the realms of your mind and heart.

Personal enslavement

December 2, 2012

I am preparing to write a book titled “The Enslaving of America”, identifying the five major periods of slavery found in the historic past of the United States of America. As I have pondered the historical facts related to this horrifying part of our past, I have found that there are two primary enslavement components. The first is, as anyone would expect, the purposeful detainment, disenfranchisement, and destruction of the rights and freedoms of one, or more persons. This book will investigate and share the ravaging of five distinct publics which have been desecrated.

Title:      Enslaving America – The Five historic eras of Slavery in the United States of America

1.       King George enslaved the early colonizers through repressive taxation without representation

2.       The slave traders greedily catapulted “old world traditions” of enslaving African men, women and children

3.       The American natives were placed in reservations; thus, placing them in long-term slavery, where they were no longer required or allowed to use their personal resources, location, or other actions offered to free people.

4.       A vast majority of Japanese people were summarily removed from their homes, jobs, and freedoms; placed in camps where their lives were put on hold.

5.       The people of the United States have been offered womb to tomb services beginning with the Great Society, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Obamacare, Food stamps, and a plethora of complicated, enslaving governmental tools intended to enslave people and rid them of freedom grow, to learn, to succeed and to fail.

The second enslavement component is universal to all humans in vastly varying degrees. It is insidious because it is self imposed and unstoppable by anyone but the individual who has placed himself in the jaws of such a dilemma. Self imposed enslavement comes under the general category of addiction. We are addicted to virtually anything in this world. Food, entertainment, music, sex, work, play, narcissism, crime, fear, avoidance, and so many other “things” can capture us and force us into slavery.

When I was in high school, I wanted to have an identity. I remember many times watching people do “normal” things and wishing I could be like them. On many occasions I did and said things that were inappropriate just so I could be part of the in crowd. Of course it never works because one can’t adopt the ideas, mannerisms, or actions of another and be successful. One famous Shakespearian quote, “to thy own self be true” rang loudly as I wandered through years of trying to be someone else. I found that the only way I could find my true identity was to look deeply into my soul and pull up the “inner me”. I was flabbergasted by what I found.

I found that I had a desire to be good. I saw that I wanted a connection with God. I saw, even in a dream, or personal revelation, that I wanted to be married and have children. I saw my sweetheart Jean and Scott and Diane. (Sorry Kaye, Dan, Andy, and David; I only saw part one). I began to look deeper into my understanding of God and all things spiritual. One day while in Long Beach while on liberty, I was in the YMCA and a nice group of young adults came over to me and asked me to join them at a church activity. We went to a church and had a nice party. When we got into their spiritual elements I found them to be very sincere and full of love for our Savior; but when they asked me to come up and confess that Jesus was the Christ, be saved, and have my sins washed away, I shared with them that I had already done this and was quite happy with the Mormon Church, my baptism, confirmation, and entry into Christ’s love. They were very surprised, but they honored my feelings.

This was not the only incident which assisted me in forging an understanding of who I was, but is was certainly one that helped me better understand that I had to be me. I had to seek out my personal salvation; my personal beliefs; my personal track to returning to the bosom of my Heavenly Father. I found that no amount of temporal pleasures (enslavements) would get me where I wanted to be. There are some who have propagated the notion that, “religion is the opiate of the public.” After a lifetime of study, prayer, wandering, reaffirming, and recommitting, I have found that the only absolute road to personal freedom is through commitment and knowledge I have of a Loving God and an understanding of the atonement, and eternal life and exaltation.

Stay the course. Do not let Satan and his angels detour you. Watch for enslaving devices which will distract you from your only goal on this earth. Love each other, love God, and by all means love yourself.

God bless you in your efforts to be honorable and true to the commitments you made with God I the eternities before this mortal station.

Loss of freedom

January 26, 2013

Go back in history with me to a tiny island of the coast of West Africa, Cape Verd. Imagine being trapped like a rat, whipped, bound, put in a cage and sold like a piece of lumber, or a slab of beef. Stolen from family, heritage, and all that ever was, transported thousands of miles in cages just above the bilges of feted ships; then put on display at slave auctions to be used by those who would become their owners. They and their posterity were to go on for generations, considered subhuman chattel.

These people were children of our Heavenly Father. They loved, learned, lived, and were in every way part of that great experiment called the United States of America. After generations they were released from their status as slaves and reunited with their God given freedoms. Most African-Americans, or Blacks continue watching, waiting, and praying that the great strides taken by all humanity will continue and that this great country will provide these blessings for generations to come.

Unfortunately, many have sold their freedom and voluntarily become enslaved and degenerated from free, resourceful, caring individuals to total and complete slavery. Those who have sold themselves are multitudinous, but I want to take you on a visit with one I will call Laura, because that is her real name. I met her through Nextep Living as she asked to be one of those who would reside in a safe house Nextep set up for individuals wishing to break from their shackles and return to freedom’s embrace. She was, no doubt, one of the brightest persons I have ever met, with a zest for life, for creating beauty in the world, and for helping to bless the lives of others. She was the last of many Nextep assisted and had only been in one of our safe houses about one week when the whole system collapsed and we were forced by legal complications to push ladies and children to move.

Laura was a great source of strength as she worked with us in talking to the police, to the press, and to Mayor Washburn and City Manager Jim Reams of Orem. Laura had been heavily involved in drugs, sexual exploits, and many illegal activities prior to her stay with us. Before her healing could become engrained in her spiritual and mental person through Nextep, she was forced into a situation where she was evicted, broke in, remained in the home climbing through an unlocked window to enter and remain. Her very addicted boy friend found her, moved in, and instantly dragged her back to the pit she had worked so hard to escape. Yes, she was once more enslaved by the demons that had plagued her. After doing significant damage to the home, my reputation, her three cats and two litters of kittens, and most importantly – her life – she was evicted, the cats forcibly removed by police, moved to Shady Wood and on to more life in the shackles of slavery.

The question of personal choice is emblazoned on the billboards of life. Can we really avoid slavery? What can we do when we find ourselves trapped in the horrible terror of knowing that we have sold our integrity, our spirituality, our love of life and family, and every good thing we have ever known, for the enticements of liquor, drugs, pornography, riches, lies and self deception, “white collar” crime, or any of a million other tools of Satan? How can we avoid getting into these precarious situations in the first place?

I am not really sure I know the answers; however, as I continue on this venture to better understand slavery in its very divergent forms, I will attempt to find these answers. To those like Laura I will never stop searching for answers; then, hoping and praying for those who have been turned to this depraved state of life. I am absolutely, positively sure that God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost play the most significant role in our safe passage through life.

God bless you as you continue to enjoy the blessings of freedom in God’s vineyard.

The first and great commandment

March 24, 2013

The Savior, Jesus Christ, gave us the first and second commandments; “Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, mind and strength; and the second to love our neighbors as ourselves. I have seen mighty evidences of people loving God and loving each other; however, there is a third part of these commandments with which many of us struggle. Many of us find it very difficult to love ourselves. We often feel that we have sinned beyond the abilities of the atonement’s saving blessing. We feel that we are not smart enough, have not done enough, have not shared our blessings with others in sufficient quantities, or qualities; thus, are not very good people.

To this I boldly declare – NONSENSE! Make every moment count. If you are feeling like you are unworthy of your life and the blessings surrounding you; get out of your pity party and find ways of assisting others. A beautiful young Hispanic sister shared her experience of being down and out, sitting in her car crying when two young LDS missionaries came to her window and asked if they could help her. First they helped her with her temporal needs and made sure she was okay in that department. Then they shared their testimonies of the Savior and his love for each of us. The experience changed her life and blessed her and her family with a beautiful, bright future.

Over the past two years I have shared many wonderful stories about people helping people. I have experienced the glow of your spirits as you have gone out of your way to bless the lives of others. You have used the spirit of the Holy Ghost lead you to situations in which you could serve as a mortal messenger; as a ministering angel; to bless in every conceivable way. We are God’s earthly conduit through which he can share with each of us as we journey through our temporal lives. Think back as you have experienced car crashes, deaths, financial collapses, marital disasters, wayward children, wayward adults, illness of all kinds, and just plain “feeling down”. If you were an observer, you no doubt reached out and gave a much appreciated gesture of understanding, an assist to the next point in their journey, a shoulder to cry on, a listening ear, a suggestion leading to resolution, or some other simple opportunity to assist.

Flip the table and now you are the person with the disaster. This is when you seek for the spirit of Christ; then ponder and listen for the Holy Ghost to minister to you. Your prayers will be answered and you will be able to continue on your journey because God loves you and wants you to find great joy in life. I can’t begin to count the times I have been to the very end of my rope. Over the years I have learned to stay closer to the spirit; thus, avoiding the ghastly silence that comes with having to start over each time. I find that the spirit (I believe through the Holy Ghost and ministering angels) is constantly available to me as I move closer to the end of my mortal journey. I believe that by participating in gospel worship, in taking the sacrament, in participating in LDS temple ordinances, in honoring and supporting my sweetheart and family, I receive more satisfaction, joy, and earthly pleasure than I can begin to understand. I find myself going around with a goofy smile on my face and in my heart thinking of the wonderful people with whom I associate.

This week I was going to follow up logic with Knowledge, but I got carried away in the beautiful lessons on the first and great commandment.

God bless each of you as you search out and bless the lives of those around you.

Best on the planet

June 21, 2013

Good food, good friends, great family; who could ever ask for more. I observed yesterday as friends and family met as a bon voyage party for Skyler Jacobs, soon to depart on a mission to Calgary, Alberta, Canada on a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Mission calls come through our LDS prophet (at this time, Thomas B. Monson) and are proffered to young men and women who are worthy to share the Gospel with honest and honorable people around the world. I look back fifty some years and compare my maturity, spiritual strength, and testimony with today’s youth. These young people are sincerely desirous of serving God. They love their families, their friends, and our Savior and are willing to forego the opportunities for education, recreation, and financial rewards to make all this happen.

Everyone at the bon voyage party for Skyler was not a member of the Church. Some were not believers in God, but they all had one thing in common. They love this young man because of the opportunities they have had to see him grow and learn and ready himself for life. The conversations around the room were widely divergent. Young ladies eyed Skyler as a “hot” prospect for romance when he returns. Older people, like me, pondered and discussed our lives and the things we have done. We also discussed the things we have never had the nerve to do. We discussed “bucket lists”. The day before we went to a frozen custard stand in old Las Vegas and had what I would call a soft ice cream Sunday. Not because we needed it, or even particularly wanted it; but because that was on Skyler’s “bucket list” and we were just knocking things off the list.

Years ago, we went to a fellow’s house in La Cresenta, California. I’ll think of his name in a minute. He was quite famous and had pursued many venturesome activities in his lifetime. He had mementoes of his exploration all over his house and had completed virtually everything on list. I was impressed and began laying out some of the things I wanted to accomplish. I never actually wrote those challenges on a list; rather, I posted them mentally, so I probably lost some in the processes of the mind.  I wanted to:

1.       Serve in the US Navy. I had done that, serving four years as a Machinist, AC&R specialist on the USS Hornet CVS 12 from 1961 – 1965.

2.       Build a personal testimony of God the Father, of Jesus Christ, and of the Holy Ghost.

3.       Understand God’s eternal plan for us with sufficient clarity as to be able to successfully navigate life’s myriad trails and trials.

4.       Hold stead fast to the Iron rod (the word of God)

5.       Get myself to a position where I no longer had a desire to do evil and follow Satan’s insidious paths (Moroni 10-32)

6.       Marry in the LDS Temple which I did with my sweetheart May 1, 1965

7.       Have children. I knew that I would have two and we were blessed with six.

8.       Go to college and become a real estate tycoon. I did go to college in Marketing and Real estate, but the tycoon part somehow passed me by.

9.       Serve as a teacher and professor for forty years. NOT!!! That never entered my mind. My father taught me very clearly; “if you can’t, then teach; if you can’t teach, then teach teachers.” Probably just rebellion pop. Sorry about that.

10.   Help other people. Hopefully, we have been helpful to some as we have move through our years on this rock.

11.   Endure to the end. Maybe more. I wanted and still want to listen and watch for signals from the Holy Ghost and ministering angels leading me to serve in ways which I couldn’t think of as a mere mortal; then act on those promptings.

For 48 years Mom and I have been one. We have not always been perfect. Far from it, we have had more discussions (code for fights) than most heavy weight title holders and I have hurt mom’s feelings way more times than I care to count or remember. What I do want to remember is that we always make up and promise to continue on the path we started so many years ago.

What’s in the future for us? Hopefully more of the same! You see, we have grown in wisdom and knowledge over the years. We have learned to be understanding and patient. We have learned to honor the other’s feelings and ideas. Will we have more discussions in the future? Absolutely! We will continue to be two people trying to be as one, as long as money is involved in our daily events. Will we continue to beg forgiveness and promise to do better? Absolutely!

Thanks mom. You are the very best and I love you eternally.

God bless each of you as you struggle with mortality and strive to live each day a little better than the last.

Incredible journeys

June 30, 2013

Our lives begin with a wild entrance to earth; our spirit joining our temporal bodies. We go from a spiritual state of full awareness that our decision to unite body and spirit will lead us through tests of mind and spirit that defy all possible descriptions. I have suspicions that we witness trailing bits of knowledge and understanding for the first little while we share our new lives with earthly families. I suspect that ministering angels are present and assist in the transition. As we begin to stabilize in mortality, our parents or others take over and assist us with our physiological needs. We get air, food, sleep, cleaning, and hopefully, love from those around us.

Watch and take notes on people who have experienced the worst in deprivation. Some are born in war-torn times, ravaged by those who wish to control your very existence. Some are tossed aside as a used piece of clothing, only to be conscripted into another’s war. Yet, from these; the most maligned people on earth; come many who survive and become leaders who inspire and bring hope to millions. One can’t help but wonder about their marching orders as they left the spirit world. Could it be that they were among the most honorable and courageous and were given the most challenging lives. Many millions die at birth; while others spend their entire existence finding ways to maintain life, regardless of the circumstances. They live and they die without fanfare, without anyone outside their specific sphere of reference even knowing of their presence.

Others are brought to earth under circumstances which preclude their experiences being part of the norm. I met with a friend yesterday that has Down’s syndrome. He is one of the most charming, delightful souls I have ever had the privilege of calling a friend. He is a thinker of the first realm. He, I believe, understands more of eternity and spiritual matters than the most dedicated, educated humans. I also wonder about his assignment on earth. This is absolutely not scriptural-it simply comes from observing Karl as he shares his deepest feelings through life’s journey. His wonderful mother is ill right now and his feelings and compassion expressed are absolutely magnificent; as if he were passing the blessing of heavenly messengers on to those around him that all is well.

Many of us have been blessed with loving parents and family. We have been given all the temporal blessings one can imagine. We have been offered the blessing of spiritual understanding. We have been provided with a conduit through which we can ask for and receive spiritual and temporal guidance.  We have been provided with prophets, teachers, spiritual leaders, scriptures, spiritual reference material, and a loving family of “believers” that help us through each breath we take. I have mentioned my mother’s (Grandmother Lucy) ponderings as she wondered why the scriptures were so replete with war, death, antichrists, and other vicious, mean spirited life activities. The answer lies in the answer to how we live our individual and unique lives. Why do we turn from God? Why do we ignore the blessings of heaven? Because we choose to think that we have done all this by ourselves. We become secular humanists. People are naturally jealous, selfish, and self-serving.

We need the spirit of God in our lives to help us through this life. We need God’s help to do all that we are capable of doing. Satan, Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Castro, and an entire cast of life characters are bonded together. Call it what you may. One term is Gadianton robbers. They and their secret combinations, self-serving agendas, and determination to place God in second position have always been with us. They will continue their quest to destroy all that is beautiful and good. Our job is to stand as witnesses of the joy of God the Eternal Father, his Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost. My joy is in serving my heavenly Father through listening and acting on promptings from the Holy Ghost and ministering angels. My joy is in living life in a way that will enable me to share the blessings of Eternal Life and Exaltation with my magnificent bride, our children, grandchildren, and all that live up to the expectations of God.

God bless each of you as you move through the wonderful experiences this live provides.

Independence

July 7, 2013

We enjoyed the last week of celebrating the freedoms we have as citizens of the United States of America. In one short week we were able to meet with, eat with, visit with, and chat with almost all of our children and grandchildren. We had the added pleasure of having a fantastic blast from the past as we had lunch with Bob and Jean Lewis – the family I mentioned a few weeks ago. While Jean and Jean discussed all the exciting news of our respective families; Bob and I solved all the problems of the world. We single-handedly created new communities in Socorro, Holbrook, and Toquerville using relatively inexpensive property and homes build in nodes (bathroom, kitchens, family rooms, bedrooms, roofs, etc); then set on pre-manufactured basements and/or foundations. You see at seventy we have determined ourselves to be independent of old thinking and are adapting very nicely to understanding that we are very young in the eyes of history and the eternities.

Incredible as it may seem, we are blessed with opportunities to do and be whatever we choose. Imagine for a moment that we lived in a country such as Egypt. Imagine living under the monster threat of Muslim insurrectionists. Now, imagine thinking the kind of thought that we had as we visited with Bob and Jean. Imagine living in fear of honoring and loving God. Imagine what it would be like to live in a country that has as its primary goal the annihilation of our very best nation friend - Israel! The most amazing part of our great American heritage is that we are still welcoming those from other countries; even those who do not wish to participate in the great American experiment. They come by the millions each year because they know the power and the rights they will have in the United States of America.

On July 2, we shared the day with a sendoff for our first LDS missionary of our grandchildren and a reunion of our Duane and Jean Jacobs’ family. I never cease to be amazed at the level of intensity which prevails in each of our family members. They are dedicated to all the right things. They want to make good decisions and have the innate intelligence and determination to do so. They question all things as they should; then, gather from history, family, and God those things which will craft their beliefs and destiny. They each have more knowledge of Gospel, God, and the universe at their young ages than I did ten times over.

At 18 Sykler has a testimony of Jesus Christ. He is fully capable of sharing his love of the Gospel with others through love and charity. He beams with anticipation as he looks forward to his treck in into the great unknown waters of life in beautiful Cardston, Alberta, Canada. He will meet challenges of every conceivable nature and face them squarely with the Holy Ghost on one arm and our Savior Jesus Christ on the other. He will love people and they will love him. Most importantly, he will find great joy in growing and learning about all the important things in life.

Freedom is a two-edged sword. We can do anything we wish. We will always be responsible for our actions. If we are angry at others, we will reap anger. If we love others, we will reap love. If we choose to ignore the opportunities offered by our Constitution and citizenship, we will provide fodder for the enemies of freedom and risk the loss of all that has been created for us in this Garden of Eden.

May God shine his countenance upon you. May he bless each of us as we strive to live our lives as examples of solid Christian principles by serving and loving others who are less fortunate!

Honor thy mother and thy father

July 28, 2013

My mother always honored her parents by sharing stories about them and giving them high booking. Her mother, Clara Bustamente Baca died on influenza when mother was nine months old. Her father, Nazario G. Baca died when mother was barely five, leaving Lucy Baca, Eleseo, Mariana, and Dolores very much alone in this world. They became inseparable and lived lives very much intertwined in the others until each passed through the veil to meet our maker.  What a wonderful legacy; sharing the goodness and mercy of those who brought us into this world.

As a child I often frustrated my parents by being where I wasn’t supposed to be, doing what I shouldn’t, and generally finding ways to keep things on a rocky setting. I am not sure I understood genuine family love until I set off on my own, joined the US Navy and got a sense of what I had missed. My mother was a buzz saw of love, activity, and caring. My father had no clue to what parenting really was. Mother noted on several occasions that she didn’t believe she could have raised us without the blessings of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Both of my parents, Lucy Baca Jacobs, and Charles Glenn Jacobs loved us in their own unique way and we were blessed to have them be the cradle of our existence. Each year I learn more of what they went through, how they survived financially, physically, spiritually, and as parents. They did the very best they could with what they had. I honor my parents as pioneers, venturing into the realm of parenting without a script. I truly believe they honored their earthly estate and did the best they could to serve; then return to our Heavenly Father.

I watch and marvel as each of our children share their love with mom and me. They truly care. They worry about the nonsense we get ourselves into and share their spiritual and temporal blessings with us. On my 70th birthday they gave me several goodies from their spiritual cache. They shared their personal and phone visits with us and gave us their personal love and approval. They think we are getting kind of old and that our gray matter doesn’t serve as well as it once did, but they love us unconditionally never-the-less. In other words they honor us regardless of our crooked teeth and strange behaviors.

I thank God for the incredible life he has provided for me; for my amazing bride of 48 years, and for the opportunity to see the new generations blossom into the kind of posterity that will find ways of overcoming the horrific economic, governmental, spiritual, social challenges they will conquer. They have my deepest and most profound love, support, and appreciation as they take the reins and move forward to the coming of Christ and the restoration of all things.

God bless you all as you work to serve you family, your country, and your God.

Duane Jacobs, father, grandfather, brother, cousin, uncle, and fond friend.

Concho

August 4, 2013

There was a land called Concho. In this land lived a family that didn’t have a care in the world. The mother and father and two boys lived at, or in Glenn’s Trading Post. Three roads converged at an intersection where the trading post stood proudly inviting all to get gas, food, and other assorted goodies. World War II raged on, killing millions directly through shelling, bombings, and hand-to-hand combat, but the Jacobs family didn’t have a care in the world. Evil and conspiring men raped and pillaged the heart of Europe and went hell-bent and unchecked after their goal of eliminating Jews and others who were seen as less desirable than they, but we didn’t have a care in the world. After all we lived in Concho and we had only been on the earth less than two years. We had been blessed to come to a home where love, honor, freedom, and the mighty word of God were the clarion call.

Father was in the Navy as a CB (Construction Battalion) as mother and grandfather held fast to taking care of our family at home. Well, mother took care of the store, the gas station, the kids, and attempted to keep gramps from going too far off course. This was a time of mighty upheaval, with no rational person thinking that things would ever be as they had previous to the war. Those that lived in war-torn parts of the world; those that were honorable citizens of every country in the world feared we may have lost our opportunities to be free – to enjoy the opportunities of living our lives as we so chose. Millions stood up and said, “Not on my watch.” They went, they fought, and many died. They saved the world from communism. They saved the Jewish population from being exterminated.

Most have forgotten the horrors of World War II. Most would like to say that we don’t have a care in the world and that all the problems in the Middle East, in South and Central America, in Russia and many of the counties freed after the break-up of the Soviet Union belong to someone else. Most find the irritations surrounding extremist Muslims, Taliban, 9/11, and other international travesties as phony problems held out to disillusion and steer conversation and political direction away from reality. One television and radio presenter, Glenn Beck, has constantly warned that we need to continually watch the other hand. To look beyond the raging headlines, the most vocal of the politicians, and see what is behind door number two.

This week I had the honor of visiting with my cousin Clara Jo Fitch. She and her husband have been like rock stars to me and Jean for almost fifty years. We actually stayed in their camp trailer at their home in Stockton, California on our honeymoon. (Yes, I know; but we were young, in love, had no money, and didn’t see anything wrong with it.) We talked about many in the family, failing health, past experiences, a cousin who devoted her life to serving as a nun in Africa and just a tiny bit about our faith. Jo has some concerns about individuals who would demean, or otherwise see other human beings as less than God’s children, to which I heartily concurred.

I shared with Jo that her mother had long ago put that problem to rest. Auntie Lola was a life-time Catholic. Her brother Eleseo had become disenchanted with Catholicism as a youth and chose to be buried without service, or ceremony and that was his business. Auntie Lola’s oldest son married a wonderful lady from England and at some point in their life became members of the Baptist church. Her sister Lucy, my mother, became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints when I was about nine years old. After years of questioning and some harsh rhetoric regarding differing beliefs, she said very calmly, “Let’s just wait until we get to the other side and God will sort it all out.” I add my hearty amen to this statement.

This weekly letter is read by Catholics, “Mormons”, Jews, Lutherans, Baptists, non-believers, and others. All are children of God. All have the blessing of believing what they may. I think this is a crucial moment in the life of the earth. I think this is the time when we put our personal beliefs up as a banner which says that God’s first and great Commandment was to Love Him; the second like unto it is to love each other as we love ourselves.

May God give us the strength, the courage, the wisdom, and the inspiration to stand together in serving Him who gave us life, and in protecting our families, our fortunes, and our freedom.

WOOPS!  HERE WE GO AGAIN

D. Duane Jacobs

PREFACE

A variety of how-to organization books have been written over the past century.  Some have even been read and of those, a few have actually been used to make changes, which have improved the relationship between management and labor.  Some writers have interesting perspectives and associated theories that provide a knothole view of the thinking of some management and why they think and do the things they do.  Woops!  Here we go Again, is a view of organization life from another perspective. If you turn the organizational pyramid upside down it makes for an interesting view.  A view that it not particularly pleasant for management, but might be helpful as reorganization, down-sizing, retreading, closings, and out-right failures in business tend to be a staple of in the world wide economic sector.  No need to be alarmed.  There is nothing in this writing that you haven’t thought of.  In fact, some of the ideas are built into the basics of how you perceive management to operate.  So, just relax and go for a nice read with me and see if it is possible to create a communication that incorporates universal understandings.

Over the years I have shared a presentation entitled, PMA.  Traditional interpretations of that acronym have it sharing the theme, Positive Mental Attitude, which I believe is one of the most important verbiages each of us can play out as we attempt to live life to the fullest.  My presentation, however, shares another interpretation of PMA—Please Make Adjustments.  The experiences of many who have gone through repeated organizational changes are generally not positive.  The scenarios all start the same.  Some cataclysmic experience attaches to their lives and they are left to sink or swim, depending on their tenacity.  The following story is my attempt to go one step further and hopefully, share another dimension.  This added dimension might help in understanding the job each of us struggles with; namely, redefining and making changes in our everyday roles as we attempt to fit new organizational plans into our lives and working environments.  Woops! It is a view of organization and its changing methodologies from the observations of one in the trenches.  It attempts to follow two different scenarios.  One in which management perceives its role to be that of director and the other in which management becomes facilitator.

CHAPTER ONE

Comparisons have been used in contemporary organizational writings, which attempt to relegate workers to poor little creatures with thinking capacities in the same level as mice.  The comparison subordinates their perception to that of well intentioned, non descript parts of the masses, very similar to the creatures in a school of fish being rounded up by larger prey for virtual elimination – fat and happy to the slaughter house, where they achieve their ultimate usefulness.  I have chosen to make other assumptions and they are spelled out in the list of parameters Virgo, a bright, young member of management creates in the following story.  This list of values is representative of the qualities I have ascribed to all humans in working class environments.

In some comparisons labor seems to be modeled after military, non-commissioned personnel – the rank and file soldier, with striking contrasts when compared to those in authority, or the officers who are part of the benevolent leadership, or thinking groups.  In yet another scenario, some writers and organizational specialists appear to consider the officer corp. and the enlisted ranks of the military as two, or more social caste levels.  Who’s to know?  We can leave that debate for another day and writing, or discussion.  My purpose is to show that, regardless of the intended spin others have put on the current direction of organizational behavior, significant good can come from considering an organizational model that embodies the belief structure suggested for the little people and the mousses.

In an attempt to show that in any manmade line of demarcation between management and labor, royalty and serfs, or any other contrived definitional distinction. and any other humans more than one alternative may exist; consequently, more than one conclusion can be reached.  By putting another layer of figures in the equation I have provided different logic and conclusions for management and all levels of the organization. The primary distinction between the scenarios is the appreciation, or lack thereof of value attributed to each person in the organization.

CHAPTER TWO

Can and Do were busily going around banging into walls of a labyrinth they had voluntarily entered years before.  They had been productive workers for several years but recent economic turns and poor management practices had created an environment in which they were no longer employed.  They were still capable of doing the jobs they had been hired for all those years ago.  The only problem was that management had not kept up with current technology and other technical practices Can and Do were not qualified to do the jobs that had replaced theirs.  They had been let go in the latest downsizing and they were really unhappy. They spent the majority of each day doing the wall banging and hurting themselves, generally becoming more confused, frustrated, and non-productive than ever.  They spent a great amount of time in this self-destructive dilemma and were getting really tired and kind of disappointed because their security had been shattered, their unemployment was about to run out and they really had no place to go, or any way to take care of themselves in the future.  Interestingly, at about the moment they had lost all hope, and quite as if by magic, they found a new labyrinth where they could work, after considerable retraining at the expense of the benevolent government, and could once, again, feel a sense of pride, pay their bills and be productive.

Gee and Whiz worked for the same labyrinth and had also been released from employment.  Both Gee and Whiz were part of middle management and were no better trained in modern management warfare than Can and Do.  What could they do?  They had been given non-productive, dead-end jobs that did not provide them with any semblance of dignity, or feeling of self worth, so they had both decided that they would take the “out” the labyrinth had been plying them with and go elsewhere.  They had made the plunge and here they were. They had spent enormous amount of time being angry, frustrated and starving through a prolonged period of maintenance in a pity potty state.  Eventually, Gee started looking for ways he could become productive again and made use of Positive Mental Attitude theory. Putting his best foot forward, he decided that he did have something to offer the world and that he should, could and would step out of the dark and eventually achieve a few crumbs of personal success.  He used his innate logic and all of the education and training he had accumulated over the years.  He used the network of friends and associates he had acquired over many years and through the myriad of times the GungHoites had determined that it was time for change.  He had successfully dodged the axe each of the previous times because he was younger and more able to adapt to the changes that were perceived to be needed.  He did get out.  He did find new horizons by starting a new organization and actually helped many who had been zapped as he had.  Whiz, on the other had, after all the theorizing and ranting, simply curled up in the fetal position and mentally died, leaving bitterness and self-doubt rampant.  Gee had gone back into the labyrinth to find him, but by the time Gee got to Whiz, there was simply nothing left but memories of what could have been, if only. . .?

In the meantime, Gung and Ho, who were very large people, looked in from above, kind of like psuedo gods, having the power to help, but choosing to allow their puppet-like friends to languish in self-doubt and disbelief.  GungHoite theory was simple and pure.  Gee, Whiz, Can and Do deserved what they got.  They weren’t productive and they were bringing down the entire playing field with their whining and lack luster performances.  Each player was simply expendable.  Sure, some were team players that had worked long years for the Labyrinth, while others were relative newcomers, some only working as part-timers. Regardless, each could probably have achieved much more if they had put their mind to it, so perhaps this will serve as a good hard lesson to them that they simply need to be smarter, more motivated, and have more luck than they have had in the past and then they can move up to higher levels in some other labyrinth and not get so complacent.  Those that were able to relocate and bring their lives back in tack could become a little bit better professionally, but certainly not anywhere near the exalted level of the GungHoites. Those who were old, tired, or lacked the tools to re-achieve their former capacity to have any success would simply have become obsolete.

Gung and Ho were sitting around feasting on their successes when a lesser, but still large (in the category thereof) member of the ruling class, Virgo, made a startling and, truthfully, politically incorrect statement.  Kind of siding up to Gung he said, “Long, long ago when I was first being fitted for my overly large shoes, I looked down in the labyrinth and saw a scene very similar to the one we have been witnessing.  People were struggling.  Some were very lazy.  Some had not kept their skills up to date and others had terminal lethargy.  Then she really got brave and told of her marvelous research.  She asked her major mentor if I might try a simple experiment.  She was given permission and used these statements as the parameters for her study.  Virgo’s thesis was to determine if there was significant difference in the results between her study and the protocols that had been tradition for these many years.  We are results driven, you recall, noted, so it will be good to see if there is another way through which we can achieve a more positive result.  Not being terribly motivated to listen, Gung and Ho had patiently nodded as Virgo went on.

She had created an underground chat line with the labyrinth people as part of some research and had saved a record of some of the communication. She had been so bold as to actually create two-way communication with them and got them to share their perceptions.  The informal leader; thus, the communicator for the little people, slipped a list of labyrinthish principles in the last communication they had had and noting that they did not all adhere to these principles; rather they were more of a creed through which they attempted to live to the fullest of their potential.  The list she was preparing for this segment of her research was partly from this wrapping from the labyrinth.  Musing, she thought to herself how peculiar it was, that these little people could actually think.  She knew that they were very intelligent, but for them to actually think and create rational, logical plans actually put them in a sphere that was not much different from the one from which she hailed; that of the Gung Hoites.  As fascinating as these thoughts were, she quickly brushed them aside, and realizing that if she ruminated on them too long, she would bias her research; thus, minimizing her potential to show Gung and Ho how ready she was to move up the ladder of succession. She listed these strange assumptions as part of her experiment.

There appears to be several groups of labyrinthites from different genesis; however, they have much in common.  According to the chat notes she had received,  they all share these common characteristics, to some degree.  They:

  1. Attempt to do those things that are in the best interests of the labyrinthites.
  2. Consider the people to be the reason the labyrinth has value
  3. Have a need for recognition for work accomplished as well as for their potential contributions
  4. Believe each person has unique potential.
  5. Believes in being patient, kind, humorous, courageous, curious, imaginative, frugal, sharing, honest, understanding, and dedicated.
  6. Believe each person is capable of achieving financial stability sufficient to provide for his/her personal and/or families needs
  7. Understand that each person is lovable, capable, and worthy of being compensated for the functions he/she performs.
  8. Each person has the capacity to change; thus, being adaptable to the current environment.
  9. Finally, a curious element which was not directly translatable to the logic of Gung and Ho, something about being tenacious and long serving, thus transcending change for change sake.  Virgo had observed this phenomenon first hand as she visited the lower kingdom, but was still unable to understand what was meant by phrases like, “I was here long before they were in charge and I will be here to straighten out their messes after they leave.”  The research was hers to develop and she would leave this unsettling note in just to see where it took her.  Surely, the Labyrinthites didn’t think that Gung and Ho’s word was not to be taken as the ultimate in lasting truth!

As Virgo attempted to relax in her suite after work, couldn’t help but muse over the interesting, but unsettling beginnings of her research.  She finally dozed off after hours of turmoil fading into deep sleep with the thought pressing heavily on her mind that it was highly possible that her thesis would be disproved and that would not be good for her rather lofty aspirations in the world of Gung and Ho.  She sighed.  My gosh!  Surely the Labyrinthites had gone to far in their thinking and had begun to actually believe they were as important as the Gung Hoites, who, after all, were big people who were much more important than these subordinates.

She bounded out of bed after a less than successful attempt at a good night’s rest.  Oh, well, she thought to herself as she began her morning preparations for the workday.  There is only one way to disprove this incredible fabrication.  Put it to the test.  Empirical evidence will quash these notions in a large GungHoites second, Virgo thought confidently, as she excitedly began her research project in earnest.

Virgo used the original observations of the Labyrinthites as her baseline and created a set of very specific change agents so she could clearly prove her thesis that, in fact, these underlings were not capable of higher order, dispelling the notion, once and for all, that logic, manipulation, and rational thinking were for the GungHoites and should never again, be considered as an element understandable by the Labyrinthites.

Virgo went down into the depth of the Labyrinth.  She made detailed plans for her ascension into the labyrinth.  She brought her preliminary data, definitions and other research tools with her.

The first thing she saw as she made her descent and came directly in contact with the Labrinthites was that they were very much like the GungHoites in appearance.  There was a very delightful array of diversity represented among the people and each group had its unique characteristics.  There was one thing that struck Virgo with a powerful blow to her intellectually superior mind.  These people, for all intents and purposes, were virtually identical to the GungHoites.  Some assumptions made over the years that they were tiny in stature and mousy in perspective and mind were simply not evident in any way.  They greeted her with respect and encouraged her to participate in their social activities.  How odd.  She would include these observations findings in her preliminary findings, then go on to prove her thesis.

Her plan was simple.  She would simply create a “What if?” scenario.  She would recreate history, incorporating selected items to be tested from the list she had formed after her communication with the Labyrinthites.

CHAPTER THREE

The lives of the Labryinthites had been difficult, but relatively free of anxiety since the last change.  There was never anything left over to set aside for the future and with prices rising faster than income, things kept about the same year after year.  Then they began to hear murmuring from the GungHoites, again.  Periodically, the GungHoites would determine that things should be different.  There was never a good definition handed down as to what that meant.  All the Labrynthites knew was that things would change and that many would be put out of the labyrinth to survive, either successfully, or wandering off in oblivion.

During the last “change”, the GungHoites, who had been rather strident about their efforts had been portrayed as having a “Cop” mentality.  That is, they made sure everything was orderly, but not necessarily up to speed in relation to their competition.  Things had become a bit rusty and there were certainly some Labyrinthites that had not been carrying their share of the load.  Virgo noted in her research, again, that diversity of thought and mind prevailed and that no two Labyrinthites were the same.  The last big change had brought about some catastrophic results.  The GungHoites had made significant communication links with the more superior Labyrinthies and had, in fact communicated with everyone asking for suggestions and inputs that would help in making the “change”.

Virgo knew that the GungHoites were looking for ways to show that the Labyrinthites had been instrumental, had had “ownership” of these changes that were about to take effect.  If fact, Gung had often noted in his comments to lesser GungHoites that it was important to get “buy-in” so that the effects on those left would be minimized.  In Casual conversation with some of the Labyrinthite elders, Virgo found that this effort had quite the opposite effect on the Labyrinthite.  If it wasn’t so serious, it would be comical note one brave worker.  “ I would like, just once, to have an opportunity to build our future through a team approach, with the GungHoites becoming advocates, enabling the Labyrinth to achieve its potential by using its most prized resource – the Labyrinthites themselves.  Another Labyrinth elder calmed the other by bringing his myriad years of experience to the table, noting that, “this ‘change’ will also pass.”  “When the GungHoites become bored and go on to other things, we will be here to pick up the pieces and try to get back to the business of ensuring the proper performance of the Labyrinth.”  This wasn’t, at all, what the GungHoites would want to see in Virgo’s report, but she wanted to make it as comprehensive as possible.  Perhaps, they would forgive her for putting all these terrible truths in her report.  They might even read them and appreciate another perspective.  No, not really.  She knew what they wanted to see.  Nothing but a total vindication for the GungHoites and their superior nature would be appreciated.  Research could be valuable, if it proved the intended thesis.

It was self-direction they wanted.  Tomorrow was a new day and Virgo was about to commence on the most fantastic journey of her life.  She would go back to the list and provide what the Labyrinthites wanted.  She would prove her thesis, get rid of the nagging doubts she had and prove her worth to the GungHoites so that she could continue her climb to fame and success.  She could even see herself becoming the next generation leadership when Gung retired and went off to the happy retirement ground to play gold and talk of his successes.

CHAPTER 4

This was fascinating.  The real work was about to begin.  Could Virgo pull it off?  Could she really interject divergent criteria and recreate the scenario while minimizing any other external factors that might make taint her research?  She would certainly try.

Gung and Ho were looked like they had been hit with a brick!   They were angry that anyone would thing they were anything but generous and kind.  Hadn’t they provided work opportunities for scads of people over eons of time?  How ungrateful it was for these same people to suggest that they could have been better served if they had lived by this set of contrivances that Virgo had brought back and was sharing with them.  The Labyrinthites had a purpose to serve and upsetting Gung and Ho was not part of it.  They read incredulously, as the went carefully through each part of the note.  They saw the list more as an indictment of them, than of a list of qualities, or an honor code by which the Labryinthites tried to live.  They read on:

We, the Labryinthites believe that the following characteristics represent our community and we encourage all to follow their values.  The Labryinthites believe that they:

  1. Attempt to do those things that are in the best interests of the labyrinthites.
  2. Consider the people to be the reason the labyrinth has value
  3. Have a need for recognition for work accomplished as well as for their potential contributions
  4. Believe each person has unique potential.

  1. Believes in being patient, kind, humorous, courageous, curious, imaginative, frugal, sharing, honest, understanding, and dedicated.
  2. Believe each person is capable of achieving financial stability sufficient to provide for his/her personal and/or families needs
  3. Understand that each person is lovable, capable, and worthy of being compensated for the functions he/she performs.
  4. Each person has the capacity to change; thus, being adaptable to the current environment.

By this time Virgo was standing near the door and near tears.  Gung and Ho were angry and their red eyes and stern faces showed that they felt betrayed.  Gung Ho said, “ Virgo, this is all your fault.  Ho agreed, adding that the whole affair needed to be put to rest NOW so that everything could get back to its natural order.  Virgo knew that this was her going to be either her finest hour, or her last breath as a potential GungHoite leader.  She squared her shoulders and said with a voice that was supposed to be the roar of a lion, but came out sounding very much like a sheep as she implored Gung and Ho to remember the purpose of this research was to refute the nonsense they had been reading and prove once and for all that the GungHo traditions were the way things were supposed to operate.  A strange thing happened just then.  A calm, then a smile came over Gung and shortly after Ho relaxed, smiled and proclaimed that Virgo was a budding genius.  Her plan would surely foil the dissenters’ plans and then the GungHo dynasty could go on and on and on.

CHAPTER  5

The day started off great for the Labryinthites.  Can, Do, Gee, Whiz, and a whole bunch of other Labryinthites of all varieties were busily engaged, working their trades and getting through the day.  Rumors abounded that the GungHoites were about to create another change and they knew what that meant, but something different had preceded the rumors this time.  Gung and Ho had sent one of their own down into the Labryinth to talk to them about the whole economic thing and how there were real needs for change this time.  Communication channels were created so that anyone who wished could share their perspectives about the things that had happened in the past and how they thought resolution could come this time.  They had some excellent ideas.  Some of the ideas had been discussed in GungHo circles, while others had never been dreamed of.  The first idea that surfaced incorporated four of the Labyrinthite concepts from the list.

Summarized, the concepts reflected a need to work towards the best interest of all labyrinthites; recognize that the value of the labyrinth stemmed directly from the people; that each person – regardless of station – had a right to be recognized for their accomplishments as well as their potential contributions. Attempt to do those things that are in the best interests of all; with a firm understanding that each person has unique potential.  Ho, in one of his very few assertive moments, declared that this could be done.  He looked Gung right in the eye and noted that he too had seen some remarkable talent from his observation post atop the labyrinth and that he was all for giving them the opportunity of sharing helping to build their own destiny.  Gung just sat and gazed at Ho, unable to control his anger and frustration at being upended by his cohort. Let them try, he signed, noting to himself that this was all in the nature of an experiment anyway and that when Virgo’s thesis was proven, he would have his satisfaction and his revenge.  Ho would get his in the end because Gung would remember the challenge and bring it back to haunt Ho in spades.

CHAPTER 6

The Labyrinthites were dubious at first, making the typical comments one would make after being told that a tiger had changed from stripes to spots and being asked to belief that it was an honest and permanent change and not simply a whim brought on  by some illogical change in the weather, or in the mood of the beast.  Soon, however, Gee began to visit with others who had developed the original set of values.  He commented that it would be a sad day if they didn’t pursue this opportunity and show what they could do.  The Labyrinthites had a chance to prove their worth and show that things could be better for everyone including the GungHoites if they made use of their values, then created and implemented a plan that would maintain the spirit of their values.  They should do it with all the gusto they could muster.

Soon others began to climb on the rather shaky platform that held them so tentatively as they floated above the chasm with its jagged and foreboding crevasses below.  They knew that for many it was a very risky endeavor because it was in fact a challenge of last resort.  Virgo, by providing this opportunity through her research project had allowed them to believe they could make an attempt at succeeding without layoffs, down-sizing, outsourcing and other terribly grievous treatments that had been applied to their labyrinth in the past.  Virgo knew that her thesis was in direct opposition to the possibility for this creative nightmare to succeed, but after Ho’s bold and somewhat politically suicidal comment, even Virgo was beginning to have a faint glimpse of what the potential of this great experiment could be.  She quickly pulled her thoughts back in order.  She wasn’t about to go against Gung.  She had seen what he was capable of in the past and wasn’t about to get caught up in GungHo wrath.  She would go and brush up on GungHo protocols and etiquette over the weekend so she would not start taking on the less than glamorous characteristics of the Labyrinthites.  She knew what side her bread was buttered on and she wasn’t about to get sent away to some remote rock to be passed over by history.

Monday morning, she awoke to an incredible noise.  The Labyrinth was aglow with excitement.  Those little aragonites were organized and ready to go.  They had somehow, magically organized into teams, with each team having a leader, a scribe, and a runner.  They had made huge posters that provided challenges and motivation.  Energy was running so high that one could not help but get caught up in the euphoria.  Whiz and some his cronies were sitting on the sidelines playing eternal doom sayers, but for the most part, the Labyrinthites had become mobilized.  They had purpose.  They had resolve and they had the support of the GungHoites through this outrageous experiment.  They were going to prove what they had was said was possible for as long as they could remember.

CHAPTER 7

Changes were coming so rapidly now that it seemed as if everything was a blur. No one could stop them.  They were invincible because they knew that they were capable and lovable and worthy of being compensated for what they did.  What a strange elixir this was.  There was anger, happiness, questioning, pondering, and pure euphoria.  There was also some name calling, some questioning of authority, some bickering, and some losses.  They had been given the opportunity to change – to move mentally beyond the box and see what they could do if they simply moved forward.  Most importantly there was an aura about them that bespoke the very essence of self-esteem; of self-actualization.  They had been challenged and they had risen to the challenge.

Everyone that was still on-board this outrageous train was learning at a magical rate.  New ideas, old ideas revisited, technology and communication were being pressed out of every pore and into every particle of the labyrinth.  Virgo found herself feeling like she was part of this craziness.  She needed to go out in the rain and take a good cooling off walk.  She was getting sucked into this magic as surely as water is cycled down a drain.  Strangely, even after her walk, she found herself wanting to do things for the Labyrinth.  She couldn’t help it.  She wanted to facilitate.  What could she do to help these great people move forward with their cause.  She knew!  She would show them how much progress they had made and how close they were to success.  She couldn’t tell them that they had defied all odds; that they had succeeded when everything including the very purpose – the thesis- of the research was diametrically opposed to the very thing that they were accomplishing.  She would note this all in the secret notes she had been compiling since she had begun to get caught up in this most exciting of events.  Change came at a frightening pace.  Recommendations for change came from every sector.  Things would look, smell, and act differently.  Some components of the labyrinth would remain the same.  Because the labyrinth had been an operating, functioning, productive entity in the past and because the most important asset – those who were part of that entity – had good ideas and were willing to change and help re-define the entire labyrinth from air fresheners to passing zones, this incredible experiment was proving too good to be true.

CHAPTER 8

Gung was very bright.  He just had not thought in terms of making changes in his understanding before.  When Ho had made that awful scene and said the things he had about letting the labyrinth people see what they could do, he was mad, embarrassed, and confused.  How could someone he had worked with for so long, take such a terrible swipe at his kingdom and by extension his power and his logic.  He was embarrassed because he had not been the one to think in these new terms and he was afraid and confused because he was sure a coup was in the works and that he would find himself overseeing some remote rock in the dark and frozen northlands for the rest of his career.  Calmer minds revailed, however, and he found that because of the tremendous successes that had been spawned by the labyrinth and because of the incredible loyalty (a value he had learned from the last statement in the labyrinthite list of values), everything was good.  He was still shown respect.  He still wore his regal designations declaring him to be the head GungHoite, and he enjoyed an increased portion of GungHo salary and benefits because there was more to go around.  Virgo knew that she had taken a horrific chance.  She could have become one of the frozen rocks in the north country and never had a chance to move up in the organization.  Because she had taken chances, been willing to generate buy-in on a very tenuous opportunity and professionally challenge the status quo, she was now in line to become the next assistant GungHo leader and go forward in history as one who became liked and respected by all levels of the spectrum.

Hour by hour; day by day; progress, change, and positive attitude became the bywords.  Weeks, months, and years passed.  Places, people, ideas, and potential for success changed, but now there was a difference.  A genuine, lasting, understanding, appreciation and mutual respect had been forged that transcended all differences and time itself.  Utopia?  Probably not, but close enough to make life, jobs, and human interaction very pleasant and worthwhile.
