THIS WAS WRITTEN IN 1968 43 years ago - Astonishing!
You probably don't remember the name Eric Hoffer.
He was a longshoreman who turned into a philosopher, wrote columns for newspapers and some books. He was a non-Jewish American social philosopher. He was born in 1902 and died in 1983, after writing nine books and winning the Presidential Medal of Freedom. His first book, The True Believer, published in 1951, was widely recognized as a classic.Eric Hoffer was one of the most influential American philosophers and free thinkers of the 20th Century.

His books are still widely read and quoted today.
Acclaimed for his thoughts on mass movements and fanaticism, Hoffer was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1983.
Hopewell Publications awards the best in independent publishing across a wide range of categories,
singling out the most thought provoking titles in books and short prose, on a yearly basis in honor of Eric Hoffer. Here is one of his columns from 1968 -- 42 years ago!
Some things never change!~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~ISRAEL 'S PECULIAR POSITION...by Eric Hoffer – Los Angeles Times 26/5/1968.The Jews are a peculiar people: things permitted to other nations are forbidden to the Jews.Other nations drive out thousands, even millions of people and there is no refugee problem.
Russia did it, Poland and Czechoslovakia did it.Turkey threw out a million Greeks and Algeria a million Frenchman.Indonesia threw out heaven knows how many Chinese and no one says a word about refugees. But in the case of Israel , the displaced Arabs have become eternal refugees.Everyone insists that Israel must take back every single one.

Arnold Toynbee calls the displacement of the Arabs an atrocity greater than any committed by the Nazis.Other nations when victorious on the battlefield dictate peace terms. But when Israel is victorious, it must sue for peace.Everyone expects the Jews to be the only real Christians in this world.

Other nations, when they are defeated, survive and recover but should Israel be defeated it would be destroyed.Had Nasser triumphed last June [1967],
he would have wiped Israel off the map, and no one would have lifted a finger to save the Jews.

No commitment to the Jews by any government, including our own, is worth the paper it is written on.

There is a cry of outrage all over the world when people die in Vietnam or when two Blacks are executed in Rhodesia .But, when Hitler slaughtered Jews no one demonstrated against him.The Swedes, who were ready to break off diplomatic relations with America because of what we did in Vietnam ,
did not let out a peep when Hitler was slaughtering Jews. They sent Hitler choice iron ore, and ball bearings, and serviced his troops in Norway .

The Jews are alone in the world. If Israel survives, it will be solely because of Jewish efforts.
And Jewish resources.

Yet at this moment, Israel is our only reliable and unconditional ally.We can rely more on Israel than Israel can rely on us.

And one has only to imagine what would have happened last summer [1967] had the Arabs and their Russian backers won the war,
to realize how vital the survival of Israel is to America and the West in general.I have a premonition that will not leave me; as it goes with Israel so will it go with all of us.

Should Israel perish, the Holocaust will be upon us all.

This week was an incredible blast from the past. Yesterday I visited with two older gentlemen who claim to be part of my Scottsdale High school history. They can’t possibly be because they said it was fifty years ago that I graduated and there is no way that is true. Do the simple math and you will see that I would need to be 68 years old, that I graduated in 1961, taught for forty years, spent four years in the US Navy, married over 46 years ago, and have six children and twenty six grandchildren. Add to that an incredible woman who has stood by my side all these years through feast and famine, three degrees, numerous foster children, nieces and nephews, strays, businesses of all sorts, and physical ailments of all types and you get someone else. Seriously, Doug Austin and Joe Richardson really were a significant part of my teen years. They are part of the P.L. Lawrence and (can’t remember the first name) Montana, blue 50 Ford made into a Baja buggy era. Most of our lives have been lived between the book ends of 1961 and Scottsdale Beavers and today. Add to that group, Ted Day, another high school friend, now living in Tennineo, Washington and one could tell stories all day about lives, challenges, mistakes, opportunities, and blessings.
Time flies so make the very best of every day. I have been trying to fill my mind with positive, spiritual thoughts to help erase, or at least dim some of the disturbing things that I have put in it over the last 68 years. If I get to sounding preachy it is because that is exactly what I mean to do. If I can save one person from repeating one of the dumb things I did, I will feel justified.
Here is an example of what not to do. This was back in the Scottsdale era. Several of us found a way to enter the old Scottsdale church through an open vent up on the roof. We thought this was so cool because we were able to go undetected on several such excursions. I am not sure what was so spectacular about being up there except that it was against the rules. The last time we went in, one of us (I recall that it was me) slipped and put a hole in the ceiling. It didn’t take long for the bishopric to figure out who had done it and soon enough they were knocking at my door and I was down at the church helping to fix the problem. That goofy stunt could have cost me my life and for what? Just to prove that we were nutty kids egging each other on to do things which were against the rules.
When you want to sass your mother, watch a tv show that has lots of violence and swearing in it, play video games that make a game of killing other humans, pocketing something from a store that isn’t yours, remember that these things will be in your mind long after you have garnished any miniscule pleasure from the act.
God bless you in your efforts to be strong in your commitment to live Christ-centered lives and share your blessings with others.

Note: Two blogs that I am aware of include my own – Grandpa Duane Jacobs; and John and Sue Laing – 2 Laings (John and Sue Laing are contemporaries, now serving an LDS mission in the Freburg LDS Temple. Also, Stu Morris (another Scottsdale 1st ward friend) and his wife just left for their mission.

Merry Christmas 2011

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
NOTE: I inadvertently left our wonderful son, Andrew, his wife Camie, and their children off the Christmas letter. Man, am I getting feeble minded. Anyway, here it is after the editing. When Grandmother Lucy was with us, she used to tell of an older lady that would sit and redo quilts she had made until they were an absolute mess. I think that is what happened here, but no excuses and many apologies. Duane Jacobs
The years come and go like pickets on a white fence as we race by them in our revved up lives. The absolute highlights of the last few years have come through being associated with our wonderful friends and family and in sharing our knowledge of Heavenly Father and of our Savior, Jesus Christ. It is through these solid foundations that we are able to continue in life, satisfied that we are on a steady course, holding to the iron rod - the word of God – and doing some of what we were sent to the earth to do. We have seen financial extremes, illness, births, deaths, and virtually all other elements associated with this mortal probation.
Some have an extremely difficult time during this Christmas season because of past experiences, feelings of self doubt, and wandering faith. For those who have become disillusioned with life, please be of Good Cheer. God loves you and wants you to succeed and return to his presence. That is his Eternal plan of Salvation. Our most sincere desire is to be able to serve others; to work through the promptings of the Holy Ghost, the Spirit of Christ, in blessing others lives. We thank each of you for the kindnesses, friendships, loyalties, and goodness you have each shared with us and pray for your continued love, wisdom, and good hearts.
We have been very tardy in responding to your Christmas cards and letters for the past several years, so we want to share a few highlights from our family.
· Grandmother Lucy passed away February 15, 2009. We were blessed to have mother in our lives, especially during the ten years she spent in Utah where she attended church, blessings, baptisms, birthday activities, and generally shared her life, testimony and experiences with us.
· Grandmother Jacobs (Jean) is doing great. She is actually caught up on quilting and starting to work on two that are two-years out.
· Grandpa Jacobs (Duane) has passed the point of no return at 68 and is planning to live thirty more years and die exhausted. Grandmother and Grandpa have been married for 46 years and are looking forward to another half century, or so, on this planet.
· Scott and Amy are raising a wonderful family in Las Vegas, Nevada. Starlee, Skyler, Aspen, and Brighton are all growing up way faster than most would imagine.
· Diane and Richard have been married twenty five. They are raising five wonderful children. Shanna, Michelle, Elena, Jake, and James
· Kaye Lynn and Jamie have now lived in Magna just short of forever and are raising four incredible kids, Taylor, Lindsay, Shannon, and Macy.
· Daniel and Teresa moved from Meridian Idaho to Bothel Washington They have five wonderful children, April, Timothy, Lucy, Emma, and Thomas.
· Andrew Duane and Camie Jacobs got left off our Christmas letter. They have four marvelous children, Sydney, Cameron, Mya, and Ty.
· David and Susan have been married nine years. They have four children, Hailey, Ashley, Cason, and Olivia.
To our wonderful friends, in-laws, outlaws, shirt-tail relations and others with whom we have maintained contact over these many years; we are privileged to have had you be part of our lives. We truly enjoy having each of you as part of our life experiences.
We wish you the very best in everything you do and stand for.

God bless you. Have a wonderful, merry Christmas and many new years to come.

Duane and Jean Jacobs
